I have been putting this off. It's really not that I don't think about writing these posts, but somedays what I want to talk about isn't really the norm for a jewelry blog. Somedays I just need to vent about something, or am looking for a sympathetic ear. When there isn't really anyone in one's life who can fill those roles, then cyberspace calls, but that's TMI for anyone reading out there. I read other crafty blogs from time to time, and they are all about the creative process, with great tutorials and the like. Moving forward, should I decide to continue this seriously, that is what I should be doing.

Overall, last year was a good year for Pink Gargoyle. Sales were consistent with 2010, which I guess in a fragile economy, is a good thing. Some new shows were absolutely fantastic - the Bloom Markets in Ft Langley were superbly organized, marketed and attended. A Crafty Affaire in South Surrey shows tremendous potential. Make It Vancouver continues to grow in scope and attendance. My hat is off to these talented people who conceptualize and realize these great markets. I know it's not easy, especially to do it so graciously as well. I really respect their dedication to promoting local artists and designers.

I learned a hard lesson too. Responding to an invite for a series of new Christmas markets, called "Made in BC," I learned that no matter how professional the application looks, or the apparent capabilities of the organizer, some people are strictly there to scam you. Losing several hundred dollars in application fees to shows that didn't happen is a bitter pill to swallow.

Looking ahead to 2012, I'm going to try for some of the even bigger shows - One of a Kind, the Harmony Arts Festival. With so much beautiful jewelry in Vancouver, it's hard to know if I stand a chance. However, my collage paintings got such a great response during the last few markets, I am continuing with them this year and will actually agree to sell them this time. I have also been learning how to do bookbinding, with the covers being smaller versions of my collages. I hope that by adding to what I have available beyond jewelry, then I can venture into new markets. At any rate, creating these have been a tremendous outlet when I need to take a break from jump rings and polishing.

That's pretty much it for now. I've been more of a recluse the last six months, except for going to markets. Maybe recluse is a bit strong - let's say I'm more selective about whom I spend time with. After a rather harsh comment about the future of a friendship at the end of the school year, I tend to keep to myself and my family. Ultimately, they are what matters most anyway, and I am so tired of the way a lot of women seem to treat each other. Frankly, it's no surprise that some of my best friendships in my life have been with men. They are not so quick to pass a damning judgement and terminate a friendship over some imagined slight.

Off to yoga now to find some inner zen, and to try to not fall over. Then back into the studio, to explore what possibilities await.

The Perfect Woman in Black & Whether or not she had ambition, her own wants, or any other thought in her head seemed irrelevant. Indeed, it seemed that that ideal image was a marketable brand. Neat trick huh? I guess I haven't had much to say the past few weeks. Just working and living. Seems to take up all my time. I've had my first few shows of the year and the feedback (and sales!) are off to a great start. Thanks so much for all the wonderful comments about my new pieces. I especially like talking to those of you who have known me from the beginning and have seen the changes over the years. Your support and encouragement for me to keep growing mean the world to me. And for those who are seeing my jewelry for the first time and like it, just know that I am always looking at new ideas and want to keep growing in my craft. I take all of your comments and suggestions to heart so please continue to let me know what you think. "White" is now finished and made its debut last night at the Newlands Wedding Show. I had a new table display too. All in white of course - set up on blank canvases with white flowers and loose white petals. A big blow-up of one of the pictures of Lily modeling for me too. I really thought it looked pretty. Of course, there is not a picture of it as my camera is possessed and often chooses not to work. I have taken quick shots of all the pieces in the line and put them into a price catalogue. If you are interested in receiving it, please send me a message and I will email it to you. This is just until I convince Lily to pose for me some more and I get the rest of the shots done properly. She's happy to do it, but she would prefer that I take the pictures on a warmer day than last time. Poor thing was wrapped in just a scarf on the dining room table while I snapped away. When I get some more of the seaglass pieces done, I'm taking her to the beach to pose there. What else? Damn genetics I guess. I've doomed my children - especially Lily. So far this week she's had her first real migraine, been told she's getting braces by the end of the year, and tomorrow chances are high she will be getting glasses. Max got his eyeglass prescription today. Hopefully he won't be getting the migraines too. I've read that while fewer boys are prone to them, those that do get migraines are often also sleepwalkers. Max had been over his sleepwalking for about the last six months, but he has started again in the past couple of weeks. Recently, I found him on the couch in the middle of the night, just sitting there, eyes wide open but clearly still in sleep-mode brainwise. I'm thinking that he might be going through some kind of growth spurt again and things are firing a bit off kilter. Anyway, got to run right now. Just a reminder - please let me know if you would like a copy of the white catalogue or pictures of anything else you've seen at my table but hasn't made it onto the website yet. I'll get it to you. I'm am working to get the website totally up to date so thanks for bearing with me. Nothing like retail therapy.

On a funny side - I had to write an "artist statement" for the jury. All about what inspires me- the burning urges inside that help bubble up all my creativity. I know I should have one and so I spent hours one day trying to write this thing without sounding like a pompous git. Apparently, what I wrote seems to be more akin to soft porn. My husband read it and thinks its hot. All the talking about the molten metal swirling around or something. I should spend more time alone with him apparently..... he seems a bit hard up. Too funny.

So a bit cheesed I guess about the results, but to coin an overused phrase, "it is what it is."

Back to work.
Cheers!

Jury Duty

On Sunday I am to take four pieces of jewelry to be juried for the daily market at Granville Island. The jury is held only once every two years. Two years ago, I was tempted but knew that even though my work was pretty, it wasn't up to snuff for the artisans on Granville Island. Frankly, I am nervous about my chances this time too. The competition is fierce and the quality of the artists is outstanding.

Any jury is nervewracking though. Here you are, being judged on whether your work is good enough to sell. They say yes, and wow - big sigh of relief, validation, "They really like me...." You get told "no" though and it's hard to not take it personally. It is a huge blow to one's ego, to one's motivation to keep going. You question whether to keep slogging away at something that means so much and wonder if anyone will ever think it's good enough. It is difficult to sometimes keep that professional distance - to understand that you are not being judged, that it is simply not the right venue for your work. And the problem is too that there is no explanation given when you are told no. It would be nice to know that your worked was liked, but there weren't enough open spaces, that it's not suited for the market, that something.....but it's just NO.

Vancouver is a very competitive jewerly marketplace. There are a lot of designers and they are very good. And while I know that what I make is definitely unique, it is also a more difficult sell. Finding the right venue can be a challenge, and remembering that the jury process is there to make sure that you are successful at the market can help ease the blow of rejection. Let's hope that I remember my own words when I get my answer next week.

Overall, I do prefer markets that jury - even if I don't get in, and especially when I do. It does mean that there is a certain standard that sets the market above just the "first come first served" venue. The customers have a higher expectation and are more likely to appreciate the artistry of the vendors ( and accordingly, shop). They are not there just looking for a bargain or some inexpensive imported bauble to keep the kids quiet for a few minutes.

So....we shall see what happens next week. I won't have an answer right away on Sunday and will have to wait a few days. I'm taking four carefully chosen pieces - "Blooms", a new piece from the Alchemy collection, "Vintage Punk," and .....torn between two others.

There's always 2013.

Directions

Been working steadily all month and so many more ideas to hold onto and create into something tangible.

"White," will be the new bridal line of jewelry and should be ready by March for the first of the bridal shows I intend on doing this year. Features round Swarovksi crystals in many sizes, quartz, white pearls, sterling silver, metalwork, white satin and organdy ribbons. I've created a soldered silver infinity symbol wound with crystal that runs as a theme through the line. These pieces are more delicate than what I normally produce and I think they will be so beautiful when they are done. I'm really pleased.

The other line goes in completely opposite direction and I finally came up for a name for the pieces today. This collection will be called "Alchemy." Alchemy is the "art of transmuting metals," and is usually used to reference the wished-for transformation of metal into gold. This jewelry uses rough-hewn pyrite (fool's gold), lemon quartz, vintage watch gears, lots of soldered metalwork, grey satin ribbon and rich blue pearls. They reflect my love of steampunk, of post-apocolyptic literature and movies (The Chrysalids, 1984, Farenheit 451, HG Wells, The Stand, Mad Max...), minimalism, and raw beauty.

While I had intended to call the line "burton," for my appreciation of the vision of Tim Burton, I've chosen Alchemy to represent the post-apocolyptic world of "Nine," which Tim Burton produced. This beautiful and dark movie tells the tale of nine "stitchpunks," who represent the soul of their creator and are his attempt at retribution for the part he played in the destruction of the world. Each stitchpunk embodies one element of the scientist and collectively they return life, and hope, to the planet. An interesting fact, the voice of the scientist is done by Alan Oppenheimer, a cousin to Robert Oppenheimer. Robert Oppenheimer was the man responsible for overseeing the creation of the atomic bomb during the Manhattan project:

"I knew the world would not be the same, few people laughed, few people cried, most people were silent."

We all have the choice to create beauty in our world. We all have the choice to be more human and humane, to ourselves and to one another. Choose wisely.

The Procrastinator's Blog

That really should be the new title of this. Seriously, without that microchip planted in my brain to livestream the daily blogs I do compose in my head directly into the computer, I seriously suck at doing this regularly. So here we are, Happy New Year! I've got until the end of January to keeping wishing people that, don't I?

I have been working. Finished a number of custom pieces so far this month so that's been a great way to start the new year. I've also been shopping. I received some polymer clay for Christmas (Fimo) and tools, so I've been out acquiring the other tools I need to try my hand at making beads. I've really enjoyed studying the techniques by Donna Kato and can't wait to get started. I have to admit that I am a bit nervous about this. I absolutely suck at working with clay. I've tried pottery, even had a wheel when I was younger. Everything looked like it was made by a blind monkey with no hands. I've tried PMC (precious metal clay) - those lumpy little nuggets of silver will never see the light of day. It didn't help that the others in my class were all sculptors and handled their clay beautifully. (and yes, the class did say no experience was required) A bit intimidating and very frustrating. It's a very expensive product too, so just buying some more to play around with is not such an easy expense to swallow.

So here am I about to tackle the medium again. Stubborn girl. I don't expect to be showing any of my beads in my work for quite awhile. But I am prepared to take my time and make mistakes.

I have been working on the bridal line as well. It's called "White." I think that the pieces I've done so far will turn out really well. Delicate, flowing, feminine. I can't wait to see the finished product and post some pictures.

Been buying some new stones and glass too - more steampunk to come and certainly a line of edgier, more industrial pieces. We must evolve and I can't keep churning out the same stuff. I am keeping some favourites - the flowers for example, but they are being repackaged in a fun way.

For now, looking at shows for the year. I need to try out some new venues and broaden my reach. While I did increase sales overall last year from 2009, the markets that had been tried and true in the past dropped dramatically for sales. I may be spending more time in the car this year to go to go a bit further afield.

So I'm looking forward to 2011. It's the year of marketing and growing for Pink Gargoyle. Time to get this show on the road and make a splash.

"And to all, a good night"

Well, it's actually only 11:30 in the morning, but the last line of The Night Before Christmas somehow seemed fitting. 5 days to go and Max is so excited. It's good to see that even at 8 years old, he is still enveloped in the magic of Christmas. Lily is excited too, but a bit quieter about it all. We've been asking and asking what she'd like, and the answers are hard to come by - mostly books really. Neither one of them had any lengthy list of must-haves. It's nice to see that they are content with what they have, but it does make our job a wee bit harder. However, in keeping with my last post, we have ordered several custom gifts for each of them that will be one-of-a-kind and speak volumes to them about how special they are to us. Haven't really set foot in the mall too much. While I cross my fingers that these things will make it here on time, I know that they will be worth the wait if they are a few days late. The presents can wait if they have to, but our Christmas morning will be just as wonderful with just being together. It will be just the four of us on Christmas day as we are entertaining family on Christmas eve, but I don't mind. We so rarely get a whole day to just be together.

I finally slept for 8 hours the other night, but so far it's the only time since September that I've made it all night. The headaches have backed off a bit, so I will take what I can get. I would rather slather on the concealer and feel groggy than feel like taking an ice pick to my head to pry the migraine out. I've had migraines since puberty but the last few years they had mostly gone away. Not sure yeat what is triggering this round, but it has been quite stressful at home the last few months. Big changes are looming for my husband and until that is all settled, I feel that these things will continue for me. When it is settled, then I believe things will be really good for all of us. I've read our horoscopes for 2011 and things look promising. I'm supposed to be more creative than ever, and he is to excel in his career. Let's see if the stars are right.

I'm planning some new things for 2011. More courses for me - wax casting, acid etching to name a couple. I've got a complete bridal line to design in January. More and more custom work keeps coming in and that's super. Thanks so much to everyone who has trusted me to create something special! I'm going to do a series of more practical and technical blogs - try to get pick up by some of the bigger jewelry blog sites. 2011 is all about marketing Pink Gargoyle and really getting it out there - time to get into the States for sure. I'm going to enter some design competitions too. I'm also toying with some home decor items in copper and wood. Let's see if I can avoid biting off more than I can chew!

So that's it for now. I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanza or whatever you choose to celebrate. I hope you all find peace in 2011. Thanks so much to all of you out there who have supported Pink Gargoyle - it truly means the world to me that you find my work beautiful enough to spend your hard-earned money on it.

Cheers!

Ozymandias

"I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. A wall-to-wall crush of people for the full three days, great music and a totally upbeat atmosphere. There were some interesting outfits being sported, including a mohawk-haired woman in Buzz Lightyear pajamas (I know Vancouver is casual, but seriously?). And I'm not sure about adults wearing furry animal hats with ears. To each his/her own, I know...I know...not judging, but did make for some good people watching. For those that were wondering, maybe the only one person out there, I've decided to include the poem that is featured on my cuff bracelet that I wear all the time. It is called "Ozymandias," by Shelley, and it struck me the first time I read it in Literature 12 and it still speaks to me now.

Okay, so apparently I can't copy and paste it into this entry so the poem gets it own blog entry. I'm not that technical and it's taking too long to figure out.

Anyway, this poem is important to me because it clearly signifies how humankind's quest for domination over this planet and each other is ultimately futile. Nothing we build now, no wars, no endless quest for greed and excess - none of it will matter because in time, we all turn to dust. I'm not trying to be depressing. But I am tired of the relentless need to shop that consumes North America. With the coming of American Thanksgiving this week, and the news anchors already gearing up to cover the line ups, chaos and maybe even more deaths by shopper stampede, it puts me off even thinking about presents. We don't need anything. None of us really do. Does this make me sound like a hypocrite? Here I am making jewelry that I really want you to buy but I'm saying "hey, don't shop." I like giving gifts. I like seeing someone receive something that makes them feel special - that's a great feeling and it can be wrapped up in a pretty package. But we need to chose thoughtfully - not just whatever is on special, or the latest gadget just because it's what everyone has.

And even more importantly, we need to treat each other better in the here and now. Be kinder, be more understanding, be forgiving of other's foibles. While our buildings and bodies will eventually crumble, we can at least control the here and now and make it worthwhile. We won't be remembered for having the biggest house, or the most stuff, but we will be remembered for being simply a good person. I've recently been dumped by a friend for some unknown unforgiveable sin - several weeks of nonstop migraines, lots of product to build so no time for long phone convos, too big a muffin top - I really don't know. I fell out of touch for a couple of weeks and boom - not on the cool list anymore. No hard feelings on my part- disappointed that it happened when I don't know what I did, but I'm not going to grovel. If that is what she wants, then I guess the relationship wasn't what I thought it was. I've been mulling it over constantly to try to figure it out, but no more. I can't keep blaming myself for being busy and in a pain-killer induced stupor. It's not what I would do to someone, but as I said before, to each their own. I wish her well.

So hopefully tonight I will actually sleep and not rehash anymore. Insomia and migraines. Great combination. Anyway, back to work making more gifts....I'm doing two charm bracelets for some high school coaches. Each charm will have the number of a player on it. It's a very thougtful gift that will be remembered. The kind that brings a smile to one's face and the warm feeling inside that you really matter to someone and won't be easily forgotten or dismissed.

What's in a Name?

So in helping Lily do a bit of research on the Notre Dame cathedral the other day, we came across an interesting fact about the origins of the word "gargoyle." It is derived from the latin word "gurgulio," which means throat or gullet. In actuality, the gargoyles on the cathedral are drainpipes, hence the name - the water "gurgling" through their throats. In archetectural terms, gargoyles are functioning drainpipes, non-water spouting gargoyle-like creatures are simply known as "grotesques." There are over 5000 gargoyles at Notre Dame. I guess I have 9 "grotesques" sitting around me at home. Neither Guido nor Salvatore (yes, I name them), spout water, but they do make me happy (they are both smiling). Lily thought this little tidbit about what gargoyle means simply hilarious. So yes, I guess Pink Gargoyle is really Pink Drainpipe.

But still, I really appreciate that a true gargoyle has both form and function. I like that in modern art and architecture too. Pretty objects are lovely, but if they also serve a useful purpose, then so much the better. When I was in my painting phase, I worked first on clothing before moving to larger and larger pieces of furniture. While I decorated these pieces with themes of mythology, or mexican tile designs, each still had a functional purpose. Frankly, you can't argue with the absolute perfection of an iconoclastic Eames chair. I don't pretend that my work was ever so lofty, but still even my painted wooden pepper mills served a need. Does my jewelry? The function is pretty basic - accent an outfit and flatter the wearer by being comfortable and easily wearable. The form - well, that continues to evolve.

I am glad that the season for markets and craft shows is winding down. I have another 5 weeks to go. But I am already chomping at the bit to move on and let my art evolve. I have a list of new skills and techniques to learn during the winter and spring so that I can continue to expand on my vision of what Pink Gargoyle means to me and, hopefully, to you.

Just Being

Still waiting for fall. And waiting, and waiting. Beautiful warm sunny days and still not a sweater in sight.

I've been in my new studio for about a month now and I absolutely love it. It's so nice to sit by the window all day and watch the neighbourhood, listen to classical music and create, create, create. My husband's office has been relegated to the basement - his choice - don't forget, this was all his idea, and apparently he's lonely. I may say we can move everything back in a soothing voice, but really - I'm not going anywhere. And the dining room table is clear - and we've been eating there. That's great too. I find we spend a lot longer together over dinner - talking, laughing. I think this move has been good for us in so many ways. We only have dinner together as a family a few nights a week, so it really helps spending this extra time together.

In the fall and winter, I do find that I cocoon, and with the pressure of getting ready for the West Coast Women's Show (www.westcoastwomen.net) and the other upcoming Christmas markets, I have withdrawn a bit from the social swing of things. That's okay though - like I said, I think our focus right now is certainly more on family life. Family is the one constant and I am not about to take it for granted any longer. Friends come and go, mostly go really, and I am not a believer in the whole idea of a "BFF." As a family, we are making some decisions about some major changes in our lifestyle and location that will hopefully come to pass in the next two years. (Nova Scotia anyone?) Then it's only a hop across the pond to move to Europe in the future too. I don't want to grow stagnant by staying in the same city all my life, and I want my children to know more that this part of the world. I find it scary when you meet people that basically live down the road from where they grew up. Come on - get out of town. Start fresh with no baggage, no preconceptions of who you are supposed to be, and no pretending to be someone else just to hang onto a friendship.

I know that this all may sound a trifle negative, especially with regards to friendship, but it's not. I like having friends and I'm very loyal to them. It's just that I think that I have reached, finally, a place in my life where I am content with myself and my family, and they need to be the focus of my attention and affection. They are my world and I treasure my time with them.

It's that wonderful time of the year again

And I don't mean back to school. I mean Fall is almost here. I love Fall. I like back to school too though. I haven't done too much work over the summer. Working means ignoring the kiddies and then they just stare at their video games with slack jaws for hours on end. So I am eager to get really going on some new ideas. But Fall - boots, sweaters, no more bees....crispy afternoons and cuddles under a blanket. And rain. I love rain too. Total Vancouver girl. Truly my favourite time of year.

So new ideas - I have recently acquired a selection of vintage watch gears and enamel watch faces from the 1800s. (www.steampunksupply.etsy.com). I really like steampunk. How can I not? Huge Tim Burton fan - the man can do no wrong. I'm not out to copy the basic trend. I'm going to incorporate what I've been doing already with the little bits and pieces. I was looking through my own jewelry the other day at what I was wearing 20 years ago (so old!), and there is a lot of steampunk like pieces in my personal collection. Vintage door knockers with old rhinestones, antique watch faces and other assorted electric knick knacks - incorporated into brooches, bolero ties and the like. So I think taking on the steampunk esthetic is not following a trend, it is more like returning to my own roots - the things that I have liked and worn for years. I'm thinking of call the line "Steampink" - too corny? Anyway, I will get up some pics as soon as I finish a few pieces.

Today was the first day that I went back and read what I wrote for the last post about Lucy. I read it without crying. So that's good. Still miss her terribly but I can talk about her with a feeling of love, not sadness. Bless our pets though. They are our furry children.

I recently taken over the office space in our house for my new studio/shop so very happy about that too. My drill and hammers can come into the house. I can make as much noise and mess as I want. I can listen to classical music all day - Pablo has been relegated to the basement for his workspace now. Can't fault the man for his support in all this. It was even his idea. And guess what, we are eating at the dining room table for the first time since Christmas. Freaky. I may even invite people over for dinner.

Goodbye Baby

As I write this, there are tears in my eyes and a crushing on my heart. Today I said goodbye to my beautiful calico cat, Lucy. She was eighteen. We knew that her time was coming but that doesn't make it any easier. She began panting heavily with her mouth full open and wheezing. She was staggering. This morning she gave me her usual good morning howl and demanded breakfast, but barely took a bite. She had a small turn around the garden but asked to come back in. An indoor cat for her life, we had recently started letting her out in the garden in the quiet of the early morning. She wasn't going to be jumping any fences. She loved her adventures and would sit on the chair beside me on the deck, purring and touching me with happiness. She was peaceful as we drove to the vet's office and they were so very kind. It was all very calm and peaceful, and we said our goodbyes. I've been crying for so long today. Telling Lily and Max was horrible. Max had become very close to Lucy the last few months as she sat beside him on a chair during each meal. I think the sounds of their choking sobs was worse than the silence in the exam room. I dread the day when when we have to say goodbye to Molly. Molly and Lily are devoted to each other in the same way that I belonged to Lucy before anyone else. I have cleaned away her plates and water glass. I have a lock of her fur tucked away. Lucy loved me fiercely and enjoyed each day of her life. She was loud and tempermental and funny. She could flush the toilet. I miss her terribly and it's only been three hours without her here. So if anyone reads this and knows how strong the bond can be with a beloved pet, raise a glass with me and toast Lucy's memory. Forever my Lucykin. Mama will always love you.

One week in

And all is good. I've been walking 5k in the mornings with some hand weights, and am eating sensibly the majority of the time. I finished reading "Skinny Bitch," and the authors do make some well-researched points about diet. However, I am not prepared to go full vegan right now. I am still eating fish and organic eggs. I really can't believe that shrimp have feelings and if the chicken is treated fairly, then there is no issue for me to eat an egg now and then. I've given up dairy, sugar, and white flour. I've been having a delicious maple gluten free cereal with almond milk for breakfast and it is delicious. I don't even like cereal but I look forward to my bowl each day. I've been trying some of the Yves veggie cuisine and it's ok but definitely not the real thing. The "ground beef" was okay over a baked potato and in a taco. Cheese however is a problem. I don't really want to have soy, and the one that I have bought that is totally soy and dairy free is questionable. It make look like cheddar, it may grate like cheddar but I find it musty and nasty. I think it would be better to forego cheese, and maybe have a little of it now and then when it's absolutely necessary. Like eating meat. I am not going to eat meat on a daily basis, but if we go to the Keg for dinner and the smell of steak is infectious, then I may order my filet. I'm certainly not missing meat and there hasn't been an issue cooking it for the rest of the family.

Now, admittedly I did have some wine on the weekend (and it was sooo good), but I'm not missing that either on a daily basis. I feel quite content with what I have been eating but I do need to expand my mostly vegetarian repetoire. While my husband says he will eat what I eat, he has already forbidden any type of bean product. I love beans and there are some great recipes for delicious garlickly white beans. Anyway, he's going away again for weeks on end, so I don't really have to worry about him for now. Last night, we had mussels in a delicious broth and tonight it's scallops with some garlicky-teriyaki type green beans.

The weekend was so-so for sales. The Steveston Artisan & Farmer's market on Sunday was my most successful outing there ever. However, the Tsawwassen Sun Festival was a complete bust. Everyone was looking for a cheap bargain and hitting the beer tent. Not the right environment for my jewelry.

Trying to finish some new pieces this week but I've been slammed with a nasty cold so mostly just drifting around the house. Reading two awesome books, "Her Fearful Symmetry" by the author of "The Time Travellers Wife" and the "Vintage Caper" by Peter Mayle. Promised to take Lily out on a mommy-date today and taking Max for his mommy-date tomorrow. It's been hard giving them each enough attention with my husband away so much, so time for some one-on-one.

Lily is back from gymnastics and is thrilled to have found some change in the parking lot. Off to mommyland.

Cheers.

Um yeah, so it's been awhile.....

Okay okay - it's July 25 so I certainly didn't follow through with that resolution. Nor did I manage to shed my 20 pounds, but the year isn't over yet! Ever hopeful, I continue to try. Though Gillian Michaels has said that to try is to fail. One must do. Frankly, if there was some way of streaming all the entries I compose in my head each day directly to the blog, I would have achieved my goal. I honestly think about what I want to write all the time. It's just the sitting down and actually typing it that seems to be the problem. So you can see, it's not that I am not committed, I'm just....well, honestly I guess in this respect it's fair to say "lazy." That sounds harsh but it is what it is (I really dislike that expresssion).

So quick round up of the year to date: I have had some awesome shows - the Women of Worth event in May (www.thewowevent.com) All signed up for next year. Township 7 winery Art in the Vines (www.township7.com) Looking forward to the August date as well. I had two pieces featured in the July issue of Bead Trends magazine. I'm getting more custom orders too. I even did a large crystal spider as a headpiece for a bride. I should get some photos of that shortly.

Personally - it's been a rough year and that is another reason for the absence. Frankenfoot made a reappearance, coupled with a sprained wrist for Lily. It looks like she has chronic tendonitis in her ankle so this will continue to happen as her training gets harder. However, Lily did place in her last three competitions including a silver for her bar routine. The word "divorce" has been mentioned though things seem a bit more settled now. I am spending most of the summer as a single parent though as he will be traveling (for work) for most of it. I did a stint working full time for several months - I enjoyed it but working, driving children and running a business? We ate a lot of takeout. Max now has a full size drum set and Lily graduated to a sweet red electric guitar. Practice sessions send the house shaking. Max also has really taken to basketball.

So here we are, halfway through the summer. I haven't been feeling great either so I really think it is time for some serious lifestyle changes to get myself back on track. I've been diagnosed with bursitis in my upper leg which causes a great deal of discomfort and I've been battling exhaustion. Excuses, excuses. I am my own worst enemy a lot of the time.

So here we go. Just do. And I shall....and I shall even tell you about it.

Is It Too Late to Still Say Happy New Year?

Anyway, Happy New Year! I made a resolution to write at least one entry per week. We are now two weeks into the year and here's the first entry. A shaky start but so far I am sticking to my other two resolutions. No alcohol until I land in Vegas on March 1st and no dessert. This is the year I drop my 20 pounds of shiraz/ice cream weight. So far so good. However, we are going to a neighbour's house tonight and there will be temptation. I would rather just hole up and not go anywhere until I am off this "fast." Ah Vegas, March can't get here soon enough.

I haven't been working too much lately. Put everything away for Christmas so we could actually use the dining room. It was awful not working! I felt so restless - what was I supposed to do with all that free time? Clean the house? Not going to happen. However, as of today, I can no longer see the surface of the dining room table except for my small work area. I've got lots of sketches to work from, a shopping list of goodies and a full tank of propane.

I don't have much available stock right now. Just before Christmas, I met with Christine, the owner of My Best Friend's Closet in Vancouver at Cambie & 16th and she took a lot of pieces. Very exciting and I hope they all sell soon!

I was also interviewed for an article on local artisans for an online magazine, Entrepreneurial Woman, and I've attached the link for you. I think I say words like "cool" too much so I hope I don't end up sounding like a ditz when you read it. I really am educated and can use much bigger words!

What else? Max starts drum lessons this week so we'll have even more noise around the house. He's mastered the "banging the sticks over his head to count 1-2-3-4" before he whales on them so it's clear he's got natural talent. Lily admitted that the cute boy who has clearly had a crush on her for months finally told her he liked her "liked her." The feeling is apparently mutual though she is playing hard to get and hasn't told him. That's my girl!

Watched Julie and Julia again and still teared up at the end. Goes to show that the desire to accomplish something with one's life is strong in this one master yoda. We shall see, we shall see.

Older yes, Wiser? Not likely

So it's been nearly a month since my last entry. In that time, I have aged. Literally - I had my birthday. Ignoring the number, the day was very nice. My parents came in from out of town and we had a good time shopping and eating. There was Hallowe'en - around 550 kids. I don't even have to close the door between trick-or-treaters. They just keep coming. Managed to reduce a few little kids to tears with our decorations so I say it was a great success. Lily's boot is off and she's been going to physio for treatment of tendonitis. I think she is pretty much back to normal but she is still working it a little bit. I was pretty sick for a while in there too. It may have been H1N1. Hard to say. High fever, severe body aches, pressure on my chest. Took a solid week for the fever to break. I am going to get the kids vaccinated. My girlfriend disagrees with getting the shots. Then she says that she guesses she would feel bad if she didn't get them, and her kids got sick and died. Ya think? To each their own. I've just got a few more shows before I'm done for the year and then months of nothing. While it will give me an opportunity to work on all the designs I haven't had time to experiment with, it is like going through withdrawal without the constant pressure to produce. Anyway, this is just a short post. We're off to karate and I am supposed to be polishing some copper balls. I suppose there is some way to make that sound more dirty.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pinkgargoyledesign.blogspot.com/2009/11/older-yes-wiser-not-likely.html' title='Older yes, Wiser? I tried to adapt, I really did. I approached each shift with the idea that it was going to be a good day but...I just couldn't get past the fact that I crave chaos. I like fixing problems and puzzling through. It was good job for many people, just not the right fit for me. I just think at my age, I don't want to settle, I want something that truly suits me. Spent the rest of the day working on rebuilding my stock, sending out emails to stores that expressed an interest in selling some of my pieces. Back on track to building this business. But still feeling tense, anxious. I do think this is the right decision, but I have to go back for one more shift tomorrow. Things always work out the way they're supposed to right? You just don't know it until you get there.

Actually got to go on a "date" yesterday. Lily had her first sewing lesson with her grandma, and Max just had a good day of playing. We went to see "Zombieland." Now, admittedly, I am a bit of a closet goth. I thought the movie was hysterical. Loved Bill Murray. Zombies are certainly hip right now. "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" had me laughing out loud within pages, and "Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters" looks just as promising. Hearkening back a few years, I was a big fan of "Fido" too. In a kinder and gentler vein, we are going to see "Where the Wild Things Are" this week. Even the music score is making me tear up, and reading the book always get me too. Can't wait to go.

The bone scan was done and we've got another week of waiting. Frankly, we are crossing our fingers that her ankle is broken. Then we have a clear idea of treatment and ETA for full healing. If it turns out to be a soft tissue injury, then I think my kitten is in for a long season of physio before her life can return to normal. I have to say though, I am so proud of her. Not once since this happened has she ever complained or felt sorry for herselft. She has taken this all in stride, and though she does hurt quite a bit by the end of the day, she continues to have an amazing attitude toward the whole experience. I think that this would be difficult for an adult to go through without bitching, but for a ten year old, highly strung little girl (gee, where do you think she gets it from?) her attitude just amazes me. I am truly blessed with awesome children.

So there it is. Still hoping to be discovered, still looking for work, and ready for my 5:00 vino!

Missing my Turkey Sandwiches

So what's new? Lily's moved from crutches to an aircast boot. She kept falling with the crutches so at least with the Frankenfoot she can move around pretty easily. Two xrays have shown nothing so the next stop is for a bone scan to see if there is a hidden fracture in her ankle. The poor thing. Me - I mean. She is just busting with energy and has no way to expend it except to chatter endlessly. Honestly, I love listening to her and she has some really cool ideas, but it's like she doesn't even take a breath. She is launching a business plan to make and sell handcrafted pillows. This does present some issues. I don't have a sewing machine. I don't sew. I barely iron. Anyway, it's great to see her ideas take shape and we will do what we can to make it happen. Look for the grand opening of "Cushy Lily" at a market near you.

I also have taken a part-time job. It's pleasant and the people are very nice. There is a dress code, and somewhat of a company-issued uniform. It's an interesting transition for me. I have found that while I thought having a simple job would be an easy change, it is actually proving otherwise. Apparently, I am hardwired to be the boss and work in a high-stress environment. I always did have a problem with authority and following rules. Hence, my corporate jobs evolved to allow me the freedom to work in the grey areas. Now things are pretty black and white and my day is dictated for me. It's still early in this for me. We'll see how things pan out.

I will be updating the pictures this week. I've done some really pretty sculptural pendants and I want to get them on the site.

Final note for today. Carrie - I don't know if you will see this but I hope you do. I know it's been 11 days since your surgery. I hope that you are home and starting on the road to recovery. You are in my thoughts. Please let me know how you are doing if you can. Take care of yourself and never lose hope.

Oh and Donna - if you're out there too - hope you are doing great! I love the way you have such a positive, exhuberent approach to life.

Fashionberry Feature

Just one more little thing to mention - my feature in the ezine Fashionberry came out last week, so here's the link: www.fashionberry.com

It's the September issue (#8) and just scroll along the bottom to change pages. An annual tradition perhaps, first started last year, due to a bad knee injury at gymnastics that had her out of commission for a good three weeks. This time, we have a mystery injury. No one knows how or when she hurt her ankle but she can't put any weight on it and it's now been 10 days. We've had the xray done but no word back from the doctor. I think we're skipping gym today. For the record - last year, injuries included: sprained wrist, concussion, reinjured knee, and a veritable rainbow of bruises. Shall we try for the full-on cast this year? (oops, she just read this and is now having a cow).

I was out in Harrison last weekend for the Castle & Crafts Market. As the long-held sandcastle building competition was cancelled this year for financial reasons, the organizers are seeking a new name. I think "Handcrafted in Harrison" sounds pretty good. Anyway, I had a great time. Saw some familar faces, sold all my beautiful turquoise (sigh...it really was gorgeous), and was well-fed by Alyx. Thank you !

Been playing around with copper more. I'm quite liking it, and paired with silver and chocolate pearls, the look is pretty sweet. However, I am also a bit preoccupied with the prospect of job-hunting. The husband has decreed it is time for me to return to the workforce. While I have no intention of returning to a high pressure corporate job at this time, even the idea of part-time employment is a little nerve-wracking. Stage fright I guess. And honestly, I have nothing to wear. Really. I live in jeans, sold all my suits (though those would be so "What not to wear" now), but I do still have my stilettoes. I may just prance around in the bedroom in them (alone, it's not as dirty as it sounds), but you'll have to pry them out of my cold, dead hands before I give in and buy a pair of crocs. Umm...I am so off topic right now.

What else? Oh, I forgot to mention last time that I finally experienced a milestone of sorts. I was stung in Penticton. I have never been stung in my life and have spent a good deal of time making a fool of myself as I run away screaming from most flying insects. This experience has shown me that that was precisely the right action. Bugger, it really really hurts. I was stung on the top of my foot, right in the vein and had a nasty burning pain for about 3 days. Ugly, freaky little creatures that don't serve any purpose on this planet. Next topic....

I guess that's it for today. I'll be at Steveston Market on Sunday (sept 27) for my last market there of the season and the weather should be fabulous.

School's Back

Well, it's been a great summer. Busy markets and busy kids. Had a great trip to Seattle and blew a ton on money on fabulous pearls at Fusion Beads. Had lots of fun at the new pool in Kelown (H2O). Off to Summerland to stay at the gorgeous La Punta Norte with our gracious hosts. Pablo finished the Ironman and swears he's taking some time off. Of course, there are always shorter races to do....Big disappointment in Penticton - where did Piggy's go? We were so disappointed that it's not there anymore. Did find a fabulous restaurant at the Lakeside, and an absolutely horrible one on Lakeshore.
School's back in, Max is in grade 2 and Lily in grade 5. Both of them blew me off this morning for goodbye kisses. Oh well. Our endless round of afterschool activities kicks into high gear again this week too. No days off for anyone.
I've been invited to my high school renunion - 25 years. Way too scary. I've not been to the other reunions and have no plans to go to this one either. Frankly, high school was not the highlight of my life and I really don't have any interest in seeing former "friends" who dumped me so quickly after grad. Life moves on in much more interesting directions and I've got great friends who are sincere, fun and honest. I would never go back in time to be a teenager again. Very few good memories.
Working in copper and sterling now. Love hammering metal. Best way to work out stress.
Hugo the farting pug is sitting beside me, wafting his pungency in my direction. Makes me work faster so I can get out of this small room before I choke on the fumes. (was that more info that you needed to know?)
Saw some great movies - adult ones even - District 9, Inglorious Basterds, Julie & Julia. Oh, and finally saw Slumdog Millionaire. Still want to see the Time Travellers Wife. I know I'll cry. Getting too soft.
Anyway, I am supposed to be soldering right now, but I've updated the website and the Etsy site. As always, more pics to come.

Summertime

June was fabulous. Seriously the best sales that I have ever done and the feedback from everyone is incredible. Fab Fair was a great success, the new White Rock Market venue is awesome and Potter's is coming along. The kids did great at the Langley triathlon. Max is convinced he came in third. More importantly, he had barely learned to ride without training wheels and whipped through the course. Off the bike like a shot, I even saw him overtake someone on the run. Lily had a tougher time. She had the longest course yet for her and it was challenging. But she pushed through and finished strong. They are so set to do it again next year. My Gator's workouts are good despite the occassional desire to lie down in the fetal position. Maybe because Pablo is an Ironman, there is the assumption that I can be pushed to the limit too. I don't know. But I did pull 250 lbs across the floor the other night and that is an empowering feeling.

The Steveston Salmon Festival got off to a rocky start -totally due to me. After patting myself on the back for getting the last vendor parking place, I proceeded to drop my new apple green phone into the toilet, followed by falling down the stairs onto the sidewalk outside Starbucks. I didn't spill my tea. However, bleeding and swollen I headed back to the market, rounded up some bandaids, swallowed a handful of Advil and sold, sold, sold. A week later and my knee is still a kaleidescope of colours.

On Sunday, we did the first of the Steveston Farmer's Markets that I have signed up for. The biggest market that I've been in so far and what service! A gentleman came around to the booths offering delicious baked goods in the morning, and our lunch was ordered and delivered to us as well. An excellent idea at any market when it is difficult for lone vendors to get away.

I haul the kids with me to almost all the markets and they deserve many gold stars. Early mornings, cold wind, a bowl of cereal under a blanket. Never a complaint. I am very blessed. If only they could be such little darlings all the time......

I've got something brewing with an online fashion magazine that has great potential and am really excited about going to Harrison for the Festival of the Arts on July 18-19.

And hey - if there is anyone out there reading this - drop me a line. Would love to hear from you.

A little bit of both

May - some good, some not so good. I don't want to spend a lot of time grumbling but honestly, the two markets that I booked for May both bit. The "Health & Beauty Show" put on by Jam Expo was a total disaster. Unprofessional, disorganized and an expensive waste of my time. We've been offered a free booth for next year, but seriously...would I go back? Not on your life. Talk of a lawsuit was wafting around but I guess everyone is quietly licking their wounds and moving on. The other - the May Day Festival in Fort Langley was starting out to be a great day. Well-organized, happy people coming to enjoy the festivities and then the down pour. Everyone left and so they should have. Nobody's fault on that one. It was totally set up to be great day. Time for two more grumbles.....if someone sends a minor tv personality a piece of jewelry as a thank you for featuring them on their show, does it not seem proper etiquette that said "celebrity" should be gracious enough to send a quick "thanks"? And finally, I don't make "costume" jewelry. That is what girls buy at Claires. While I may be relatively new at this, I do have enough pride and confidence in my work that I don't think it sounds snooty to sniff at such a comment.

Okay, enough of that. The good stuff - I am really looking forward to the summer. The White Rock Farmers's Market (http://www.whiterockfarmersmarket.ca/) is bigger and better this year with some great new ideas like featuring local chefs. Potter's Nursery on 192nd in Langley has started their new market, and once all the produce vendors are there, I think it will be a great success. I had the best cheeseburger there on Saturday. (http://www.pottersonline.ca/). This weekend (June 6-7) I will be back at Fab Fair at the Heritage Hall on Main Street. (http://www.fabfair.ca/). I know I will be doing some great accessories shopping from the fabulous local designers who will be selling there. July will see me in Steveston for both the Salmon Festival on July 1st and the Farmers & Artisan Market on July 5th. I will always consider myself a Steveston girl and can't wait to go back each time. (http://www.stevestoncommunitysociety.com/).

Both kids are signed up the the Langley Tri-It Triathlon at the end of June, and my husband is full on in his training for Penticton. Apparently he lost 5 pounds on a 3 hour ride the other night. If only it were so easy for me. I've started going to Gator's in Cloverdale for their bootcamp and it is a wonderful, but very challenging, workout. Like I said, this weight is coming off me!

Anyway, I've got a bunch of custom pieces to get going on and some great new long chains to finish for the weekend. I've made a few of these long pieces and will get them photographed and online soon.

Enough chat! Off to work

A Decade Gone Too Fast

Tomorrow my daughter turns 10. Yes, it is true that time really does fly by. I was in my 30's (sniff, sniff). I'd quit my job at the cooking school (actually, due to circumstances, I had flung my keys at the owner and stormed out. Not recommended if you actually want a reference letter, but that is a long and complicated story.) In that time, I had a great stint at an investment company and rose through the ranks, had my son who is almost 7, put on a few pounds (sniff, sniff) and started this gig. My husband has done 6 Ironmans and shaved his head. We've been to Disneyland 4 times and have a torpedo of a pug named Hugo. To tell you the truth, she is not too happy about leaving the single digits behind. She's not ready to become a Tween, and I guess I don't really want her to either. But I am so very proud of her and all her accomplishments, her empathy, her sweetness, her persistence and everything about her. She is definately high maintenance and I pity the boy/man that falls in love with her. But she is amazing and beautiful. (And she is in the front yard right now talking to a boy.....hmmm)

It's been a good week on the gargoyle side of things too - I've been accepted into the Harrison Festival of the Arts in July, the Steveston Farmers Markets and Creative Finds in November. Still waiting for a few more responses from other markets and then the year will be squared away.

BTW - we saw the Secret World of Og at Carousel Theatre. Such Fun! They do such a good job there. Can't wait to see Robin Hood in the fall and Frog & Toad next spring.

Got to go - karate tonight and off to make a birthday cake.

Bright Lights, Pink Bling

On Thursday, April 16th, I was very happy to see one of my bracelets (silver squares with black coin pearls) featured on an outfit on Breakfast Television. It was very quick but there is a mention of Pink Gargoyle and a shot of the piece. My first few seconds of my fifteen minutes of fame. The link is below. It's near the end of the video so be patient (and ignore everybody else's jewelry!.....)

http://site.btvancouver.ca/video/?bcpid=16157553001&bclid=16349005001&bctid=20023227001

Anyway, it made me happy. I'm confirmed for Vancouver's Health and Beauty Show, May 8-10 at the new convention centre at Canada Place. Can't wait to see the new building. It's a big show for me to do and I am going to be burning the candle at both ends but am so happy with what I am making now.

Just making plans for my daughter's 10th birthday. Hard to believe. I sound so old but time really does go by fast. Not only is she not a single digit girl anymore, she's coming home with wt pits. I thought I had a few more years before puberty started but apparently not. And the mood swings....That is what the red wine is for.

I hope the link works. She had contacted me some months ago about participating in this summer's Flavours of Surrey festival. We chatted about the event, she looked at some of the new pieces, and I decided to get on board. What made my day was when I asked her how she had heard about me. I was expecting to hear that she'd been by my table at one of the White Rock Farmer's markets last summer, or maybe she'd seen someone wearing one of my pieces. But no - she'd found me online and liked what she'd seen. There are only 5 spots for artists at the Flavour of Surrey event, and she was inviting me to be one of the artists. Gobsmacked would be a good word for my reaction. It's the use of the word "artist" to describe my work. And it's a long way from where I started 18 months ago when I would mumble to people that I made jewelry. As I become more and more confident in what I am doing, especially now as I am working to create as much of each piece as possible by hand, I am comfortable saying that I am a jewelry designer. I think my work can stand up to the title without seeming pretentious. "Artist" is something else - and it's a very good thing. I like the sound of it. And I certainly do think that jewelers are artists. The vision, the painstaking work, and the absolute beauty of what so many wonderful artists create using metal, stones, pearls and gems, is truly breathtaking. Even if I am only standing in the doorway, it's so wonderful to be invited to the party. I will post more practical info about the event as details get confirmed.

On another note - I had a lady recently insist that when she gets hot & sweaty, the soldered silver will rub off on her skin and make her messy. Now, the solder melts around 1000 F, give or take. I am sure she won't get that overheated on a summer's afternoon. She really wasn't convinced. In fact, there was some mention of finding me ("hunting me down") in the event that the bracelet she bought did ooze all over her arm. If anyone knows of such a thing happening, please let me know and I will gladly retract all my assertions to the contrary. But really....

So I am not too consistent at this blogging thing am I? It's like a quartlerly update. I have been really busy making new pieces and things are getting more sculptural all the time. I've pretty much got the year planned out for shows so will updating when more confirmed dates come in but I've been invited and accepted at some pretty cool shows. Being invited to attend an event as an artist, and the only jeweler at that, is very flattering. I've done a bit of freelance online writing to make a few bucks which has been a good experience too - haven't had to write like that for quite some time. What else? The diet and exercise thing is coming along. Planning to attend the Las Vegas half marathon in December with a couple of friends. We should be done in time to hit the casino at lunchtime (martinis in hand). My husband, who has his own ironman blog site, has finally shaved his head. The first day I thought I kept glimpsing Howie Mandel out of the corner of my eye. I finally touched his head yesterday, four days later. Ok, I'm a wimp - I didn't think it would be that big an adjustment. He does look a lot younger though and I am sure he will go so much faster at the Penticton Ironman now that he is more aerodynamic.

My friend Donnalin has started her own blog, www.dishingwithdonna.com
She's got lots of opinions, is totally sexy and has no problem telling you like it is.

One other thing, my sister-in-law, who makes fabulous belt buckes in LA is relaunching her website next week, www.frankieandjulie.com Handcrafted and gorgeous.

Other than that - I haven't got enough hours in the day to create all that I want, market how I want, photograph and sell, sell, sell. But I love what I am doing and feel that this is the year that the pink gargoyle really takes flight.

When it rains...

It was a dark and rainy night......seriously, after two weeks of snowfall, the rain came today. Where we were crunching along on a hardpack of several feet of snow, we are now up to our ankles, and beyond, in water. Thank goodness my boots are truly waterproof. It was the first time really testing out my cool Koi Tattoo rainboots (check out the line of Chookas). But I also want to wear my Ed Hardy Geisha winter boots - just need some cold, dry weather and I will be so styling. Hmm, one would think that I should be a boot designer....I just can't get enough of them. Anyway, the business at hand - I've been playing around with the overall look of the site and like the more solid pink. I've photographed everything now and have started uploading the pictures. About halfway through so far so should be done before the week is out. Other than that - day two of eating healthy. The goal is to lose 30 pounds before summer. Too much time snacking on chips and wine while I play with wire. Love Clean Eating magazine - great recipes and easy to use menu plans. Also - excited about the Biggest Loser starting up again tonight. So inspiring. What I would give for Gillian to kick my butt.

Happy New Year

Best wishes to everyone for the new year. You may have noticed that the website seems a little bare - I'm in the process of updating it - finally. The beaded pieces are mostly gone and the new photographs of the soldered pieces will be coming in the next week. I'm excited about the new collection of soldered wire and glass rings. It's been a long time in coming, but after a Fall of shows practically every weekend, I've had a bit of a breather and am ready to relaunch. I will be building my silversmithing workshop in the garage as well. Surprisingly, I haven't set anything on fire yet with the propane torch! Looking forward to applying for a full calendar of shows for the year - even though my schedule has caused a few meltdowns for my daughter. I take her with me as much as I can but she wasn't impressed with me being gone every weekend. Note to self - create a balance between work and kids - even working at home doesn't mean one is really there for them all the time. But we will muddle through....
So check back soon - looks for some new pics, new thoughts, new shows, an occasional rant....
Let me know your thoughts, ideas and hope to see you soon!

Christine.

Well, it's been over a month since I posted my last comments. Oops! Been busy though and took some time off to go to the Okanagan for the Penticton Ironman. Not me...my husband's 6th time through. And despite the terrific downpour - last year it was a fierce windstorm that threatened to blow our pulled pork off the table - we all had a great day. We managed to get a nearly dry table to chow down at Piggy's. Yeah - it's all about the food, forget the race! He's all signed up again for next year. Done some more markets and just spent the weekend at the Harrison Hot Springs Castle and Crafts market. The weather was amazing and as always - some fabulous feedback from all of you who stopped at the table. The collaging and soldering are where it is at for me! I've got some great new ideas to keep going with the Brambles collection - incorporating some glass and gems into the flowers. I've got whacks more tile and will be doing a lot more with the toile pieces and chainmaille. In November I am signed up for a silversmithing course which I am very excited about. I've already told them that I am there to learn to make some big honking rings! Can't wait to incorporate the silversmithing into all the vintage pieces. I am looking forward to attending the Winter Fab Fair in Vancouver too - that's on Sunday November 23 for me - the show runs Saturday and Sunday though. On the Saturday, I will be at the Mompreneur show in Vancouver so it should be a great weekend all round. But first some more fun - off to Disneyland at the end of the month, then a parents -only getaway to Vegas Baby! Kids are back in school - loving it - (they are, not just me!) Ok - I really should be getting out the art clay - it's time to play with some silver! Take care,
C.

New Stock is Coming

Had a fabulous weekend - the Township 7 market - despite a drizzly start - was a great event. The sun came out, there was a great band, we had a glass of wine, and really good people there. And trust me, the wine is very nice. If you get a chance to visit the winery or see it listed on a menu - give them a try - I really like the Syrah and the Cab was great too. Also sold some pieces to a very chic boutique in Cloverdale, La Belle Vie. The toile tile pendants are now on sale in the shop and off my site. Will be looking for some more vintage, toile, italian, just funky tiles to solder into more pendants and charms for bracelets. I've restocked with other trinkets though so there will be a new crop of pieces coming to the web soon. Can't wait to make some more collages - and I've been feeling a bit frisky lately so there may be some sensual content.....not smutty - flirty, coy, sexy. As anyone who knows me will attest - I am a total flirt. BTW - we did do the pirate pack thing the other night and my daughter, the bottomles pit, polished off one and then promptly ordered another - and ate that too. She's getting expensive to feed - we're going for sushi tomorrow and I know that she will be ordering a buffet for herself. And no, she's not fat - she is very active with sports and has a jacked up metabolism. So jealous.....

A busy week ahead -
Had a great time at the White Rock Farmer's Market yesterday (www.whiterockfarmersmarket.ca) Lots of great feedback, some good sales, and the weather was fabulous. I've been asked to join the Thursday market now so will head down there this week. It will give me a chance to, hopefully, try out my new wireless credit card terminal. That's right - as of tomorrow (August 5th) I will be able to take Visa, Mastercard and Interac payments at my table. Get my lesson on using the terminal tomorrow so hope it's easy! Come on down and spend some money!! :) I really think it's an important customer service tool to be able to offer that kind of convenience. Then on Saturday - off to Township 7 Vineyards for another market.(www.township7vineyards.com) Should be a lovely day and what a pretty place to be.

Posted all the new soldered pieces today on the website. (took a bit longer than it should have - somehow I managed to delete all of the pictures when I should have been saving them. Figured out how to get them out of the trash finally.....) The tiles and collages are really pretty and so much fun to make. The only thing I have to remember is to stop licking my finger to turn the pages of those old magazines. Ick! 40 year old cooties....

Oh and one more thing - I just wanted to give a sincere thank-you to my family and true friends who have stuck by me and supported me in all of this- whether or not you've bought anything - that's not the point - I just really appreciate your interest in what I am doing, your suggestions and your encouragement. And last week, when I was so excited when I saw that I had a sale online but then saw that whoever had put that purchase through was just pulling my chain with fake information - big thumbs down to you. Obviously, there won't be anything in the mail for you anytime soon.

I've left the minions to their own devices so far but I think we're off to go see Journey to the Centre of the Earth, then maybe a pirate pak at White Spot.

Getting the Word Out

Spent the day updating the website with the new pics and taking off the things that have sold. Also finally got my Etsy site (www.pinkgargoyledesign.etsy.com) completed. Just have a selection of items there and seem to be getting viewed quite regularly. I am also posting on www.themompreneur.com as I will be selling at their Christmas Craft Show in Vancouver on November 22nd. Very exciting.

Rainy day here so it's easier to spend the day working and the minions are content to play with their toys. Just a day to cocoon really. Even the fat boy (our pug, Hugo) has been lounging on the couch, letting it all hang out as he naps. No modesty there!

Back at the White Rock market on Sunday so hoping the rain stops or I will be selling soggy jewelry...

back with more soon

Welcome to the Bling!

Hi there - today is the first day of my new blog and I am definately a newbie, having hardly read any other blogs out there but what the heck.

Today, I finally got the hang of soldering - made 5 gorgeous wedding-themed pendants. Collages in glass, composed of funky '60's wedding images and soldered in silver. Perfect for the bride or for her attendants. Love handling the soldering iron and managed not to burn myself. Everything is polished up and ready for wearing. I'll get the pics done and have them on the website in the next couple of days. (www.pinkgargoyledesign.com)

Looking at a few more shows to round out the summer and can't wait to start cutting up more old magazines, books, etc to make some more collages. Entertained the minions in the afternoon, had a couple of glasses of shiraz and waiting for Hell's Kitchen to start.

Be back with more blingnews soon!
Pink Gargoyle
